The wait is over!
Base mainnet is here and at Gelato, we can't help but join in the celebration of Onchain Summer! And things are just beginning to heat up - this week Gelato Relay and Web3 Functions deployed on the Base mainnet. The deployment will empower Base developers with Gelato's capabilities, paving the way for building feature-rich applications that are automated, gasless & off-chain aware.
The on-chain world is growing fast. With more than 230 million unique Ethereum addresses and more daily transactions on Layer 2s than on Layer 1s, it's apparent that more and more users are getting involved in on-chain activities. What's even more exciting is what users can do on-chain. Onchain solutions are changing how we think about digital art, music, loyalty programs, and even secure messaging.
So, what's driving this new era?
Base is a Layer 2 solution for Ethereum, making it easier and cheaper for developers to create decentralized apps on-chain. It reduces gas fees and speeds up transactions. Built on the OP Stack, Base combines Ethereum's security with affordability, staying open and accessible to all.
Base’s core features:
Secured by Ethereum: Base offers a reliable platform for decentralized app development. It uses Ethereum's underlying security combined with Coinbase's best practices, aiming to provide a stable and safe environment for dApp development
EVM Equivalent and cost-effective: Base aims to offer full EVM equivalence at reduced costs. Furthermore, developers can confidently craft multichain applications using its bridges.
Coinbase Synergy: Base empowers dapp creation with the opportunity to access Coinbase's vast ecosystem, including millions of verified users. This connection lets developers benefit from easy fiat pathways and seamless engagement surfaces, ensuring a seamless experience for users.
Open Source: Base is built on the MIT-licensed, open-source OP Stack and collaborates closely with Optimism. It aims to be a decentralized, permissionless platform, welcoming anyone keen on shaping a rollup agnostic Superchain powered by Optimism.
Base and the OP Stack: A Decentralized Foundation
Base is being launched as an Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) network on the OP Stack. Its main goal is to promote a decentralized crypto economy. The integration with the OP Stack ensures Base remains open, decentralized, and permissionless, and provides a platform where dapps can be built efficiently and securely.
Base's vision for a superchain
Base is committed to the vision of the superchain as an interoperable, interconnected network of multiple Ethereum Layer 2 (L2) solutions, enhancing scalability and efficiency. Instead of isolated rollups or L2 solutions operating in their bubbles, the Superchain aims to integrate them into a harmonious “mesh”, that jointly scale Ethereum.
Base will bring Coinbase’s on-chain products and user base into the Superchain ecosystem, increasing activity in the Superchain while enabling Coinbase users to seamlessly interact with dapps and move assets across the ecosystem fostering a more vibrant, decentralized, and interoperable Ethereum environment.
Gelato Relay and Web3 Functions on Base Mainnet
Exciting news! Gelato Relay and Web3 Functions have just landed on the Base Mainnet. This means that Base developers can now tap into Gelato's superpowers to create applications that are off-chain aware and gasless, allowing users to pay gas fees in any token — or even pay the gas on a user’s behalf, and finally loop off-chain data on-chain.
Already, Gelato's suite of services, Gelato Automate, Gelato Web3 Functions, and the Gelato Relay, have showcased their potential on the Base Goerli testnet. A brief rundown of these services:
Gelato Automate: Gelato Automate allows developers to set up their smart contracts with both time-based and custom triggers. While the Gelato Automate UI simplifies setting time-based triggers, for custom requirements, developers can utilize a resolver – a special smart contract that outlines execution conditions and supplies the relevant data.
Gelato Web3 Functions: Web3 Functions are the decentralized equivalent of services like AWS Lambda or Google Cloud. They enable developers to execute on-chain transactions based on arbitrary off-chain data (APIs / subgraphs, etc) & computation.
Gelato Relay: Gelato Relay serves as a powerful tool that ensures quick, reliable, and secure transaction validation, with users not having to bear the burden of gas fees. It operates by relaying users' transactions on-chain, thereby enabling secure, gasless transactions.
Gelato is web3’s decentralized backend empowering builders to create augmented smart contracts that are automated, gasless & off-chain aware on all major EVM-compatible blockchains including Ethereum, Arbitrum, Polygon, Optimism, zkSync, and many more. Over 400+ web3 projects rely on Gelato for years to power the execution of millions of transactions across DeFi, NFT, and Gaming.
Gelato currently offers four services:
Web3 Functions: Connect your smart contracts to off-chain data & computation by running decentralized cloud functions.
Automate: Automate your smart contracts by executing transactions automatically in a reliable, developer-friendly & decentralized manner
Relay: Give your users access to reliable, robust, and scalable gasless transactions via a simple-to-use API
